Dr Wong Yiing Cheong

Biography

Professor Dr Wong Yiing Cheong obtained his basic medical degree at the University of Sydney, Australia in 1996 under a scholarship offered by the Australian government to outstanding students from Malaysia and other developing nations. He commenced his postgraduate training in Ophthalmology in Malaysia in 1998. Subsequently, he obtained a Masters degree in Ophthalmology from the National University of Singapore and was admitted as a Fellow to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, United Kingdom in 2001. Prof. Wong was employed by the Singapore National Eye Centre from 2001 to 2005, and has worked with some of the best Eye Surgeons in Singapore. He was selected for and trained under the highly competitive “Advanced Specialist Training” scheme in Ophthalmology. He then set-up and administered an Eye Centre after his own name, Wong Yiing Cheong Specialist Eye Centre in Taman Cheras Makmur, upon his return to Kuala Lumpur in 2005. Prof Wong is also a part-time Honorary Resident Consultant Ophthalmologist at the long established Tung Shin Hospital, Kuala Lumpur and a Visiting Consultant Ophthalmologist at the Pantai Cheras Medical Centre, Kuala Lumpur. Dr Wong has been appointed a Professor in Ophthalmology by the Muthusamy Virtual University of Post Graduate Ophthalmology (http://www.mvupgo.com), since 2006. He is actively involved in the Virtual University, a first of its kind, dedicated to the teaching and training of aspiring eye specialists from all over the world. He is frequently featured in eye-related articles in local Chinese newspapers in Malaysia aimed at increasing the awareness of important eye diseases. He has also appeared on television to speak about eye diseases and their latest treatments. He has also published articles in various internationally acclaimed medical journals. As part of community service, he has been instrumental in organising well attended free public eye screening projects and given a number of public lectures on eye diseases in Kuala Lumpur.
