Biography

Oliver Bonello was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Malta on 1 July 2017. Prior to his appointment he held the post of Chief Officer Financial Stability and Statistics Division of the Bank. He is a Fellow of the Malta Institute of Accountants holding a CPA warrant and a Practising Certificate in Auditing. He joined the Bank in 1976 and held several senior managerial roles and responsibilities in different areas of the Bank. In his executive role he was instrumental in the establishment of the Banking Supervision Department within the Central Bank of Malta in 1991. Subsequently, he was Head of Internal Audit and Risk Assessment, Director responsible for the Bank’s Financial Stability and Information Systems, and Chief Officer - Risk responsible for the Financial Stability and Risk Division within the Bank. He was directly involved in the drafting and issuance of various microprudential and macroprudential policy documents and guidance notes relating to regulation and supervision, internal audit and risk assessment. Mr Bonello also acted as vice-chair on the European Council Ad Hoc Working Party on the Strengthening of the Banking Union during the Maltese Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2017.
