Walker was educated at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She received a BS in agricultural journalism (1984) and a BS in wildlife ecology (1984) and a PhD in environmental toxicology (1991).
Walker is an expert in vascular physiology and toxicology. Her laboratory actively uses preclinical genetically modified mouse models to investigate mechanisms by which cigarette smoke induces vascular dysfunction and hypertension and conducts clinical translational studies in human cigarette smokers to identify potential new biomarkers of cardiovascular disease risk and novel therapeutic targets to prevent and treat cigarette smoke-induced vascular disease.
