Biography
Dr. Portnoy is a Professor at the University of California, Berkeley with joint appointments in the Divisions of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Immunology and Pathogenesis, Infectious Diseases, and Microbial Biology. He holds the Edward E. Penhoet Distinguished Chair in Global Public Health and Infectious Diseases. Dr. Portnoy has focused his entire career of 30 years on the microbiology and immunology of Listeria monocytogenes. He is an expert on L. monocytogenes genetics, cell biology, and immunobiology and his lab was instrumental in the development of L. monocytogenes as a vector for cancer vaccines.
