Early Development and Health Like all other living creatures, humans are capable of adapting to their environment. There is a large body of evidence to demonstrate that the environment around the time of conception and in very early life has a lasting effect on later health and lifespan. The life course approach to health and disease recognises that very early environmental influences contribute to an individual’s later susceptibility to the various chronic diseases that plague our society. From this perspective, research in this area focusses on various interventions and environmental stimuli during early development and their effects on later health.
