Biography
Abdoel was trained as a molecular cell biologist at the Université Pierre et Marie Curie (Paris VI) in France. He has worked on the development and optimization of human skin equivalents (HSEs) since 1998 at the tissue engineering company IsoTis. In 2004, Abdoel obtained his PhD on research conducted at the Department of Dermatology at the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden, The Netherlands, where he optimized the HSEs and extensively investigated the use of HSEs for research, diagnostic and clinical purposes. Currently, he holds a position as assistant professor in the Department of Dermatology of the LUMC and is leading the academic research group on diseased skin models, including in vitro models of skin cancer, eczema, skin aging, wound healing and skin infection. In 2008, Abdoel won the public ‘Alternatives to Animal Use’ Award for in vitroskin models.
