Biography
Growing up in Poland, Jerzy was introduced to the sciences at a very early age. By the time he reached middle school, he was hooked. “In Poland we started studying the sciences very early,” he said. “I was fascinated by experiments, and that just solidified the idea in my mind that I wanted to be a scientist and go into chemistry.” Jerzy never lost his fascination with experimental science. In fact, it became his passion. “Chemistry is one of the branches of science where you do experiments and measure things to reach a conclusion. Those of us who enjoy the process are fortunate,” Jerzy said. “Experimental science isn’t easy. It’s hard to get secrets out of nature. Achieving something significant in science requires dedication and a lot of quality time in the lab. You need patience and perseverance, but if you’re fascinated by the process, you can sustain yourself and be successful.” Much of Jerzy’s career has focused on catalysis, with a goal of designing plastics with ever-increasing levels of performance. “Even though we have been very successful at Dow with our polyolefins, we are still in the process of designing new plastics that are stronger and more flexible, even while using less product,” he said. “It’s very rewarding to know that we can design plastics that have less environmental impact and use less energy to make.” Inspiring Young Scientists, Encouraging Collaboration Today, Jerzy works with many young scientists and encourages them to spend time in the lab – and share their results. “I work with young scientists every day, and I tell them they must be devoted and disciplined to be successful,” he said. “You must understand the subject matter, spend quality time doing good experiments in the lab, and collaborate with others. “We’ve moved beyond the 19th century mode of doing science alone. Collaborating with people from all different mindsets is very important, even though it’s not always easy. I want young scientists to know that if they enjoy experimental science and share their results with others, they can have a very rewarding career.”
