Biography

Auma Okwany is a faculty member of the Social Policy and Development Programme at the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) of Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. She is a core-teaching member of the MA in Child and Youth Studies at the Institute and has convened the post-graduate Diploma in Children Youth and Development at the Institute for the last five years. Her teaching and research interests (including publications) center on the relationship between policy, practice and theory in childhood and youth more broadly and in education reform efforts in particular with a focus on factors that define exclusion for disadvantaged groups. In addition to teaching and research, she is involved in several externally funded projects. She is coordinating the Operations Research of a three-year project on Comprehensive Sexuality for Young People in Ethiopia and Uganda funded by the Dutch Government and implemented by Save the Children Netherlands and USA. She is also a co-coordinator of the three-year project funded by MasterCard Foundation titled: Righting the Future: South-South Collaboration and Capacity Building for Universalizing Secondary Education for Girls in Africa. She has degrees from Indiana University (USA), University of New Brunswick, Canada and Kenyatta University (Kenya).
