Dr. (charmaine) C.g. Ramos

Biography

Dr Charmaine G Ramos is Post-doctoral Researcher at the ISS, working with Dr Andrew Fischer in the ERC-funded AIDSOCPRO project, which explores the political economy of international development assistance directed towards social expenditures. Her current research is on the politics of structural transformation and redistribution in Southeast Asia and Latin America. She deploys the lens of institutionalist political economy to explore the nexus of social and production policies in emerging economies. She builds on her previous research in Colombia and the Philippines, where she explored conditions in political economy that shape strategies for mobilising taxes collected from key agri-export sectors. Prior to joining the ISS, she taught courses in development theory, history, and practice at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), and the University of Bath. At the LSE, she was also a Research Associate at the Crisis States Research Centre, where she examined the political economy of state-building and resource mobilisation in fragile and failed states. She has more than 15 years of experience as a development practitioner in non-government organisations and multilateral agencies working in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, where she conducted applied policy research on issues related to agricultural trade, food security, public finance, and decentralization. Dr Ramos holds a BSc and MA in Economics from the University of the Philippines, and an MSc in Development Management and PhD in Development Studies from the LSE.
