Biography
Barbara Veselka studied Archaeology of Meso-America at Leiden University with the focus on trade and network patterns in the Mixteca Alta, Mexico. In 2011 she did the Master of Science of Human Osteology and Funerary Archaeology at Leiden University. The topic of her research was vitamin D deficiency in subadults, called rickets. She published an article on this subject. She is currently a PhD researcher and the focus of her research is the bioarchaeological implications of vitamin D deficiency in adults, called osteomalacia. The aim for her research is to improve identification of the condition by assessing macroscopic, radiological and microscopic features. She uses several skeletal assemblages from the Netherlands, including the collection of Middenbeemster.
