Biography
Annelou van Gijn (Amsterdam, 1956) studied anthropology and archaeology at Washington State University Pullman (US) and the University of Groningen. She obtained her PhD (cum laude) at Leiden University in 1990 (Thesis title: The wear and tear of flint: principles of functional analysis applied to Dutch Neolithic assemblages). From 1986-2012 she has been (senior)-lecturer at Leiden University where she also directs the Laboratory for Artefact Studies. In 2008 she was appointed professor by special appointment at the University of Groningen, a position she left when she became chair of Archaeological Material Culture Studies at Leiden University in 2012.
Research Interest
Her teaching and research focus on prehistoric technology, ancient crafts, and the reconstruction of the cultural biography of objects, employing experimental archaeology and microscopy. She is one of the leading microwear specialists and as such participates in several international projects.
