Biography

Wouter Roessingh, (drs.) studied Archaeology and Prehistory on the VU University in Amsterdam. The last eight years he worked on several excavations for an excavation company (ADC ArcheoProjecten). In 2006 he had his first excavation in West Frisia, near the town of Enkhuizen. It was his first encounter with Bronze Age features in this region and the start of his interest in Bronze Age West Frisia. Under his supervision, two large scale excavations in ‘Enkhuizen-Kadijken’ were excavated in 2007 and 2009. The publication of the results were published in spring 2011.

Research Interest

Currently Wouter is a PhD student within the research project “Farmers of the coast”. In his research he will analyze the cultural landscape of West Frisia. About 40 years ago, a number of Bronze Age settlements were excavated. Three of these sites (Hoogkarspel, Andijk and Bovenkarspel) will be analyzed in his research. The large number of house plans and yards will be thoroughly analyzed, to learn about how farmyards were constructed and how the communities were socially structured. The research will result in a new model for Bronze Age settlements in coastal wetlands.
