Biography
Walter Laan was born in 1970. He studied Physical Geography in Amsterdam at the UvA. After this study he worked one year as an assistent reseacher at the VU. In the 90's, he worked as a physical geographer at several excavations in the Betuweroute project. He enjoyed his first GIS experience when working on these Betuwe projects. In 1999 he started working at ADC-Archeoprojecten as a GIS-specialist. His work comprised of managing, querying and displaying archaeological data. He also acted as coordinator of the GPS equipment. When the first Lidar data of the Netherlands became available Walter was one of the first who started working with this kind of data and became an expert on visualizing and analizing Lidar data. In 2004 he joined Archol at Leiden and continued his work on GIS, databases, digital field recording and more general ICT aspects like hard- and software, social media and websites.
