Biography

Femke obtained a Research MA (cum laude) in the Transformation of the Roman World RMA form Leiden University in 2017. Her thesis assessed the validity of current trajectories regarding early medieval cremation burials and offers an alternative model to comprehend cremation- and inhumation burials in relation to one another. During her studies Femke was a student-assistant to the Oegstgeest project.

Research Interest

As of September 2017, Femke is working within the Rural Riches project concerned with the recovery of the early medieval economy after the collapse of Roman authority in the North. The project takes the presence of globally circulating objects in the cemeteries of even the smallest local communities as an indicator that the rural population may have had a far more conspicuous role in the economic development of post-Roman Europe than has hitherto been thought. Femke’s PhD investigates the changes in burial customs of the 5th - 7th centuries AD and to what extend the deposited goods in early medieval burials can account for an increase in demand, possibly fueling economic development.
