Biography
Gert Jan Kramer graduated from Leiden in experimental physics in 1984. In 1988 he obtained a PhD (cum laude) from the same university on a thesis entitled "On low-dimensional synthetic semiconductors". Since 1988 he has been working for Shell at its Amsterdam Laboratories (now Shell Technology Centre, Amsterdam). In his first decade with Shell he held a number of research jobs in oil and gas processing, ranging from the application of quantum chemistry to catalysis to reactor design improvements. In 1998 he became involved in research relating to hydrogen as a future fuel, first working on reformers for on-board automotive applications, later moving on to hydrogen production and distribution for fuel applications. Since 2010 he is manager Energy Futures at Shell, responsible for technology assessment for alternative and renewable energy. Next to his work for Shell, he worked from 1998 until 2010 at Eindhoven University of Technology on a part-time basis, first as professor of Fundamentals aspects of Heterogeneous Catalysis, later as professor of Hydrogen Technology. At CML Industrial Ecology he holds the position of professor of Sustainable Energy. His research interests are the pace of change of the energy transition, the role of material constraints for the development of the energy sector and the prospects of novel energy technologies.
