Biography
Marike is appointed as Byvanck Postdoctoral Fellow at the Faculty of Archaeology from 2017-2019. Her research (‘GandhÄra in context: the archaeology of cultural dynamics along the ancient Silk Roads’) studies the often problematic and incomplete documentation and interpretation of the archaeological record of the GandhÄra region, with focus on early Buddhist material culture, traditionally referred to as ‘Greco-Buddhist art’, as part of material evidence of interactions and exchange between the Mediterranean region and Eurasia. Importantly, this project examines GandhÄra’s interconnectedness as part of the dynamic and complex networks of the ancient Silk Roads, an approach that has been neglected in both archaeological and art historical studies. Case studies include GandhÄran sites such as Taxila and Butkara I (focussing on aspects of iconography/style, architectural innovations, site contexts, material properties, and object provenance), as well as previously neglected archaeological data from mountain routes between GandhÄra, the Tarim Basin, and Han China (within a timeframe of ca. 1st century BCE – 2nd century CE).
