Biography
P. Michiel Westenberg is full professor in the unit Developmental and Educational Psychology of the Institute of Psychology at Leiden University. He obtained a master’s degree in clinical psychology at the VU University Amsterdam and a PhD from Washington University in St. Louis. Under the guidance of Jane Loevinger, he investigated the importance of moral development for the solution of everyday dilemmas in professional life. He was post-doc at the University of California at Berkeley where he joined the longitudinal study of personality development headed by Jack Block. He subsequently joined the Child Psychiatry unit of the Leiden University Medical Centre to work as assistant professor studying psychosocial development and its relationship to anxiety disorders in children and adolescents. His current research focuses on the assessment of psychosocial and cognitive maturation during adolescence and its relationship to social anxiety, specifically speech anxiety. He teaches courses in developmental psychology and psychological assessment.
