Biography
Alex Riemersma studied Dutch and Frisian at Groningen University and earned his PhD in 1994, having written his thesis on mastery of Dutch and Frisian among children finishing primary school. He went on to combine his work as a teacher trainer at NHL University of Applied Sciences with a job as a policy officer for the Friesland Provincial Executive. From 2007 to 2012, he was a project leader at the Mercator Europees Kenniscentrum voor Meertaligheid en Taalleren (European Expertise Centre for Multilingualism and Language Learning), affiliated with Fryske Akademy. Riemersma serves as an expert in Frisian and European minority languages for the Council of Europe. He has been a member of the Fryske Akademy since 2001, received the FIPLV International Award from the International Federation of Language Teacher Associations in 2006 and has been an honorary member of the Vereniging van Leraren in Levende Talen (Association of Teachers in Living Languages) since 2010.
