Biography
After earning his PhD in 1993 – writing his thesis, a sociolinguistic study, on the multilingual situation in Leeuwarden – Dr Jonkman and his colleague Durk Gorter conducted a large-scale survey into linguistic relationships in the province as a whole: Taal yn Fryslân op ‘e nij besjoen (1995). Since 2002, he has been a member of CVO Zuid-West Fryslân (an alliance between four secondary schools), in addition to teaching Frisian Language and Culture at various secondary schools in Friesland province. He also works a coordinator in Frisian language policy and as a researcher into educational practice, as well as having written three volumes of the revised learning method for Frisian for Dutch secondary schools. Within the department, he has been working on the development of a Frisian Language Aptitude Test since 2012.
