Shalin Mehra

Biography

  Shalin Mehra is a general dental practitioner with over 25 years’ experience providing NHS and private dental care. Throughout his career, Shalin has been closely involved with the training and development of our future dentists. He began as a vocational trainer for newly qualified dentists before going on to set up the Northampton Vocational Scheme. In 2001, Shalin was appointed as Regional Advisor for Vocational Training in Oxford region; in 2005 he became Associate Director of the Oxford Postgraduate Dental Deanery. Currently he is Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean (Foundation Training) and Dental Faculty Development Advisor for Health Education England Thames Valley and Wessex. Shalin is an advocate for continued postgraduate development and is firm in his belief that there is always room for improvement and that everyone in the profession should strive for excellence. He trained as a Mentor in the Northern Deanery and helped establish Mentoring and Training Mentors within the Oxford Medical and Dental Deanery. In 2007, he was involved in developing monitoring tools for dentists for the National Clinical Assessment Service. In 2011, Shalin helped develop and evaluate Situational Judgement Tests (S.J.T) within dentistry as a recruitment tool for Foundation Training. S.J.T has been adopted within National Recruitment in 2013 and he is on the National Recruitment Board for Foundation Training. In his role as Dental Faculty Development Advisor, Shalin helped in the development of Dental Trainers as educators within Oxford & Wessex firstly with Developing Dental Education Course, followed by the Certificate in Medical Education Course, where he has previously been a Course Tutor. Shalin was on the Steering Group that developed Guidance for Dental Educators, followed by Standards for Dental Educators in 2013; a member of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Dental Expert Reference Group (2013) and is currently a member of the Steering Group on the Assessed Completion of Dental Foundation Training.
