Biography

Dr. Mohamed H. Mukhtar, was the Interim Chair, Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Savannah State University (2008-2012). He is Professor of African & Middle Eastern History, and Arabic Language. Founder and President of Center for Peace Building Initiative CPBI. He is a board member for Greater Savannah International Alliance GSIA; and Savannah Council on World Affairs SCWA. He is president of Savannah chapter of the International Committee of Red Cross. Since 1984 Dr. Mukhtar has been producer and correspondence, British Broadcasting Corporation BBC Arabic, Somali and World Services. From 1995-2000, he was the chairperson of Somalia Committee for Peace and Reconciliation (Ergada). Since 2003-present, he is member of Global Advisory Board for Human Dignity and Humiliation Studies. From 1998-present, he is advisor, Georgia delegate for the National Summit on Africa, advising US policy makers on education for Africa.Chief editor of Demenedung, the ISA Newsletter from 1996-2001. Since 1987-90, Senior editor Islamiyyat Journal of the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia UKM. Started his academic carrier in Somalia at the Somali National University SNU in 1975. From 1986-90, Senior Lecturer at UKM, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Two time Fulbright scholar, 1983 and 1984, first with University of Pennsylvania and second with University of South Carolina. Has been engaged in peace-making and peace-building initiative throught his whole carrier.

Research Interest

My research interests, publications and conferences include the Islamic World, the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, Somalia, conflict resolution and reconciliation, African languages, Muslim Experience in the Americas. My major publications include: A Remembrance of Salah Mohamed Ali and Aw Jama Umar Isse: The Passing of a Generation in Somali Studies (2015); The Rise and Expansion of Islam (2012); Language Marginalization, Ethnic Nationalism and Cultural Crisis in Somalia (2010); Arabic in Somalia (2009); Islam Among Early Slaves in America (2008); English-Maay Dictionary (2007); Historical Dictionary of Somalia (2003); Islam in Somali History: Fact and Fiction (1995).
