Biography

Carla Bruijnzeel wrote her PhD thesis (cum laude) on atopic dermatitis (antigen presenting role of IgE+ Langerhans cells (1989). She worked 3 years at the Swiss Institute of Asthma and Allergy Research. In 1991 she received a chair in dermato-allergology at the UMC Utrecht and became head of department of Dermatology/Allergology in 1999. From 2013 till 2017 she was Manager Research and Education of the Divison of Internal Medicine & Dermatology and member of the management team of the Utrecht Center for Allergic and Inflammatory Diseases as part of the research program Infection & Immunity. Her research focus is on inflammatory dermatoses with emphasis on atopic eczema with a focus on translational research ao immunophenotyping with biomarkers aimed at finding new targets for therapy and enhancing effectivity of current new biologics. The UMC Utrecht is the world second highest ranked food allergy centre based on scientific output. It has the position of the National Centre of Expertise both for food allergy and atopic eczema (children and adults). For patient care there is a multidisciplinary collaboration with the departments of pediatric pulmonary and allergic diseases, pulmonary diseases and ophthalmology. Research in food allergy is performed within the Utrecht Center for Food Allergy (a collaboration between the UMC Utrecht, faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Utrecht Institute for Pharmacological Sciences and TNO Life Sciences).
