M.f. (marije) Bakker

Biography

Marije Bakker obtained her degree in Human Movement Sciences (2005) at the University of Groningen. In 2006, she started a PhD project at the University Medical Center Utrecht at the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology. February 2011, she completed her thesis on “Tight control and long-term prediction in rheumatoid arthritis”. During her PhD she also followed the post-initial Master of Epidemiology at EpidM (EMGO) at the VU Medical Center (Amsterdam). From 2011 she works as an assistant professor at the Julius Center for Health Sciences and Primary Care in the field of cancer epidemiology: screening and early prediction of breast cancer. Marije Bakker’ work focuses on the epidemiology of breast cancer in general and in particular mammographic density, a risk factor of breast cancer. She is the project coordinator of the DENSE study, a multicenter randomized trial. The DENSE study investigates the (cost-)effectiveness of screening with mammography and MRI, compared to mammography alone in Dutch breast cancer screening participants with extremely dense breasts aged 50-75 years. She is a member of the EPIC Breast Cancer Working Group, the PROSPECT Working Group, and also member of the Netherlands Epidemiological Society and the American Association for Cancer Research.
