Biography
Eddy Bauw is a professor of justice at the Faculty of Law of the University of Amsterdam. Justice involves the mechanisms by which legal disputes are settled. Judiciary is traditionally the most important of these, but other forms of dispute resolution have increasingly become important. Bauw is particularly interested in the contribution that the administration of justice can make to solving problems of citizens and society. In his research he tries to combine as many legal insights as possible with those from other scientific disciplines. For the benefit of education, he works closely with the professors in the 'Learning Task Force for Legal Toggle Professions', Professors of the Legal Profession (Prof. B. Böhler), Social Legal Aid (Prof. M. Westerveld) and Organization of Legal Services (Prof. Dr. van Otterlo), in particular in the field 'Legal Toggle Professions' , which is part of the 'Togaminor'. Topics covered in this course include the position of the judiciary in the rule of law, the core values ​​of the judge, rules of conduct and professional ethics, the organization of the Judiciary, forms of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and the relationship between public law and ADR. Bauw (1962) obtained his doctorate with honors in 1994 at the University of Amsterdam. He combines his professorship with his work as head of the Department of Legal Quality, Legislative Advice and International Cooperation and plv. Director of the Strategy and Development Department at the Council for the Judiciary, where he has been working since 2002. Before 2002 he was a lawyer and adviser to the Directorate of Law (Private Law Sector) of the Ministry of Justice. He is also a deputy judge at the Arnhem-Leeuwarden Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal in The Hague, member of the board of the European Commercial Judges Forum, member of the Government Mediation Committee of the Netherlands Mediation Institute, lecturer at the Academy for Legislation and author and editor of the Green Series Unlawful Deed of Kluwer. Finally, he is a member of the professors' network that is connected to the training institute of the judicial organization, Study Center for the Administration of Justice.
