J.r. (jan) Popma
Professor

Biography
Jan Popma studied sociology and philosophy at the University of Amsterdam. After his graduation (1989) he found out that an education in philosophy and theoretical sociology is not always helpful in earning a position on the job market. For this reason he was retrained to become a works councils advisor/trainer. After a subsequent study in environmental management (1991: MBA Environmental), he actually became (in 1992) a trainer/advisor in the field of occupational health and safety and environment at KGCA, a training centre for works councils. After three years of training works councils, Popma quit his job to become a freelance journalist. He wrote for numerous magazines, notably OR-Informatie (Works Councils Information) and Arbo&Milieu (OHS&Environment). He was also a board member of the section 'freelance' of the Dutch Journalist Trade Union.
