Biography
Atse Louwen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Copernicus Institute for Sustainable Development, at the Energy and Resources group. He has a background in Biology and Energy Science, and completed his PhD on photovoltaic technology assessment in January 2017. His PhD thesis, “Assessment of the energy performance, economics and environmental footprint of silicon heterojunction photovoltaic technology” combined economic analyses, lifecycle assessment (LCA) and PV performance analysis and modelling, in a broad assessment of an upcoming and promising PV technology. One of the highlights of the thesis, “Re-assessment of net energy production and greenhouse gas emissions avoidance after 40 years of photovoltaics development”, shows an analysis of the cumulative environmental impacts of the photovoltaic industry as a whole, using environmental experience curves
