Biography
Chris van der Borgh is assistant professor at the Centre for Conflict Studies at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He specializes in issues such as conflict analysis, political development and international conflict resolution and peace building. His recent research deals with the contentious processes of international intervention and post-war reconstruction. He published, inter alia, on parallel governance and the resistance against international statebuilding in Kosovo and about the conflicts and negotiations about security provisioning in post-Qaddafi Libya. He has extensive field experience – both as a practitioner and a scholar - in El Salvador. His PhD thesis (1999, Utrecht University) deals with the role of external donors in processes of local development and peacebuilding in El Salvador. Recent publications about El Salvador are on street gangs and government and international policies dealing with this new security threat in El Salvador. Over the past decades Chris van der Borgh was a guest lecturer at several universities, including the University of Copenhagen, the European Peace University of Stadtschlainung and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Chris worked for several NGOs as a consultant. Most recently he led a project on the pressures on NGOs in partial democracies for the Dutch NGO ICCO. The results of this study were discussed in a side-event of the UN in New York in 2012 and the study was published by Palgrave in August 2014.
