Biography
Eleni Braat is Assistant Professor in International History at Utrecht University, the Netherlands. Her research interests focus on secret government activities, such as intelligence and international diplomacy, and the political tensions they led to in Europe during the 20th century. She obtained her Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence, Italy, with a thesis on the disarmament negotiations in the 1920s. She holds a M.A. with honours in Modern Greek literature from the University of Amsterdam, and a Diplôme d’études approfondies (DEA) with the highest distinction in history from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. Before joining Utrecht University, Braat has lectured at the Institute for History of Leiden University and she has been official historian of the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD). She is a member of the executive board of the Netherlands Intelligence Studies Association (NISA).
