G.f.b.p. (gerrit) Van Meer
Dean of the Faculty of Science
Utrecht University
Netherlands
Biography
Since January 2011 Gerrit van Meer is dean of the Faculty of Science. With his vice deans Gerard Barkema, education, and Sjef Smeekens, research and valorization, and with Klaas Druijf, the Faculty director, he forms the governing body of the Faculty. As a dean, Gerrit no longer runs a lab. By training he is a lipid cell biologist, whose work originally focused on membrane viruses, epithelial lipid polarity and intracellular lipid traffic. He launched the idea of lipid sorting by means of lipid rafts. Subsequently he became interested in lipid translocation by lipid translocators (or "flippases"), like ABC transporters and P4-ATPases. His last experimental focus was on sphingolipid transport and sphingolipid-protein interactions. EMBO Member (2005), member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW; 2008)
