Biography
Prof. Dr. Joost Vijselaar (1957) is a historian and museumologist and a special professor of History of Psychiatry, associated with the Institute of History. The history of psychiatry studies within society, culture and science the position and image of people with psychiatric disorders in the past. In addition, attention is paid to the changing boundaries between sick / healthy and normal / abnormal in the area of ​​the psyche and for the institutional and therapeutic answers formulated on mental illness in recent centuries. Vijselaar's special areas of attention include the history of the psychiatric hospital, the history of animal magnetism (mesmerism) and hypnosis, and museums of psychiatry.
