Biography
Study of Mathematics at the Universities of Mainz and Tübingen, Doctorate in Mathematics in 1987, post-doctoral work in the United States (Cornell University, Scotland (Strathclyde University, Glasgow), and the Netherlands (Centre for Mathematics and Informatics, Amsterdam). Research and project leader at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands in the field of mathematical modelling of infectious diseases and prevention strategies. From 2005 - 2007 senior researcher at the School of Public Health, University of Bielefeld. Since 2008 senior researcher at the Centre of Infectious Disease Contol, RIVM, Bilthoven, and associate professor at the Julius Centre. Member of the editorial board of the journal Mathematical Biosciences and co-editor of two books in the area of modelling and infectious diseases. Member of the Health Council of the Netherlands (a scientific advisory body for the Dutch Ministry of Health) 2004-2013. Publications in the area of statistical and mathematical analysis of spread and control infectious diseases, and health economic evaluation of infectious disease control. Since 2012 Chief Science Officer Mathematical Disease Modelling at RIVM. Since 2014 professor in Dynamics of Infectious Diseases at Utrecht University.
