Biography
Margreet van Es studied history at Leiden University. By 2015 she is promoted to the University of Oslo in Norway. Her dissertation was about the dynamics between stereotypes and self-representations of women with an Islamic background between 1975 and 2010. At the end of 2016, her book "Stereotypes and Self-Representations: The Stigma of Being Oppressed" appeared at Palgrave Macmillan. Margreet van Es currently works as postdoctoral researcher on her project 'Muslims Condemning Violent Extremism' (MUSLIM-NLNO), which is funded by the EU through a Marie Curie Individual Fund. In this project, she studies how Muslims have been dealing with the call for explicit and public distance from terrorism since the attacks on September 11, 2001. She compares developments in the Netherlands with those in Norway. Many Muslims (and non-Muslims) find the request to take away stigmatizing. Nevertheless, Muslims have expressed much more vehement violence against violent extremism over the past fifteen years than generally accepted.
