Biography
Reinier (Raniero) Speelman researches contemporary Italian literature written by authors of Jewish origin. Why are there so many Jewish writers in a country with very few Jewish inhabitants (such as Italo Svevo, Primo Levi, Alberto Moravia, Giorgio Bassani and Natalia Ginzburg, who are also unknown in the Netherlands)? What does them care about and who do they focus on? What role does World War II play in their work? How do they write about their past and their current existence? What explains their success and how does this relate to that of writing Jews in other countries with a Jewish community (eg, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the US or Turkey)?
