Biography
Dr. RJG (Rutger) Claassen (1978) is associate professor of ethics and political philosophy at the Department of Philosophy of Utrecht University. He previously studied law and philosophy and graduated in 2008 on a dissertation on the moral boundaries of the market. He is interested in political-philosophical questions about state action in a liberal-democratic society. In his book The House of Liberty (2011), he develops a mindset around concepts such as freedom and autonomy, damage and paternalism. He applies this to a series of controversial political cases (such as smoking ban in catering, the identification of art subsidies, the relationship between work and leisure, sustainability, immigration and integration).
