Biography

Dr. van Nimwegen is European specialist surgery (ECVS) of pet animals with special interest in the treatment of tumors in dogs and cats, minimally invasive surgery (viewing surgery) and new treatment techniques such as laser surgery, photodynamic therapy and brachytherapy (radiation of tumors using radioactive holmium spheres ). In addition to specialist surgeon, Dr. van Nimwegen is radiation expert for therapeutic application of radionuclides. Dr. van Nimwegen represents the surgical oncology (tumor surgery) within the multidisciplinary oncology center: the UU Cancer Center for Animals. This is a collaboration between surgical oncology, medical oncology, medical imaging and pathology with the aim of optimal diagnosis and treatment of animals with cancer (tumors). The expertise in minimally invasive surgery (watch surgery) in dogs and cats has been in Utrecht for more than 17 years. In addition to sterilization, we also perform complicated surgery in abdominal and thoracic cavity via viewing surgery, such as removal of adrenal glands, residual ovarian tissue, lung tumors and the treatment of chylothorax and pericardium overload.
