Biography
Environmental Governance, Land Policy, and Justice in the City Dr. Thomas Hartmann is assistant professor at the Dept. Human Geography and Spatial Planning of Utrecht University. He is involved in research and teaching (BSc Human Geography and Planning and MSc Spatial Planning). Thomas Hartmann has a special expertise and research interest in: Planning theory, with a specialisation in aspects of justice and ethics in the city. Land policies and planning instruments. Land and water governance, with a focus on risk management of river floods.

In May 2016, Jane Jacobs would have had her 100th birthday. To mark the occasion, Thomas Hartmann, Claudia Basta (Wageningen University), and Stefano Moroni (Politecnico di Milano) organize a special issue on "People making cities – cities making justice: Jane Jacobs, ethics and justice"in the journal CITIES.

The aim of this book is to explain why knowledge of law is important for understanding the practice of spatial planning and for practising it in a responsible way.

In 2006, Barrie Needham's important book "Planning, Law and Economics" has been published. Thomas Hartmann is currently working together with Edwin Buitelaar and Barrie Needham on a revision of this publication.
