Biography
From 1977 to 2008 I taught Classics at various secondary schools. After my PhD (1986) I continued to work as an independent researcher until 2001, when I got a small job at the Vrije Universiteit. After the premature death of Simon Slings in 2004 I became his successor as professor of Greek at the Vrije Universiteit, a position which I have occupied until the present day.
Research Interest
In my research I concentrate on the interpretation and textual transmission of three authors: Plato, Epictetus and Philostratus. I did my PhD on the textual tradition of Plato's Republic (1986). The OCT edition of Plato's Republic, based on my evaluation of the tradition of the text, was published in 2003 by Simon Slings, one of the supervisors of my PhD. Slings did not live to complete his edition of the eighth tetralogy. It will be my task to prepare the critical editions of the Timaeus and the Critias. The foundation for this work was laid by my friend Gijsbert Jonkers, whose dissertation (1989) gives a full analysis of the transmission of these two dialogues. The commercial edition of Jonkers' dissertation was published by Brill in 2017. In 1999 I published a critical edition of Epictetus' Encheiridion and its three Christian adaptations. A Teubner edition of the original Encheiridion appeared in 2007. I have been continuing my studies on Epictetus until the present day and I presently prepare studies on Epictetus' use of quotations and on the interpretation of fragment 1. Since 1999, I have been engaged in the project of preparing a critical edition of Philostratus' Life of Apollonius of Tyana for the Teubner series. I have published two articles on the transmission of the text (2009 and 2014) and an article on the title of the work (2015). I hope to finish the establishing of the text in 2018.
