Biography
My research explores the boundaries between Chemistry and Biology. Inspired by nature, my group develops novel approaches to: site-selectively modify proteins, identify the molecular mechanism by which omega-3 fatty acids interact with human inflammation pathways, functionalizes a wide variety of surfaces with biosensors or biomimetic catalysts, explores novel methods to combat bacterial infections. We collaborate with various groups within the Wageningen University & Research community, other groups in The Netherlands and abroad. My work has been published in leading chemistry journals like J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem., Chem. Sci., and J. Org. Chem.. I obtained my Ph.D. degree from the Utrecht University (The Netherlands) under supervision of prof. dr. Rob M. J. Liskamp, for my work on peptide-based mimics of enzyme active sites, and their application in catalysis and medicinal concepts. During my post-doctoral studies in the group of prof. dr. Nils Metzler-Nolte in Bochum (Ruhr University Bochum, Germany), I studied organometallic-peptide conjugates that prooved to have unparalleled antibacterial activity, and developed several novel methods for the conjugation of bioactive peptides and organometallic moieties (21 publications). My most recent activities, in the laboratory of prof. dr. Itamar Willner in Jerusalem (The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel), were directed at the development of DNA architectures as novel catalytic entities and sensing modules.
