Biography

Jos Bijman investigates horizontal and vertical coordination in agrifood value chains. Horizontal coordination relates to the role of cooperatives and producer organisations (POs) in improving quality, productivity and inclusiveness. Vertical coordination relates the role of contract farming arrangements in enhancing quality, productivity and inclusivenes in agrifood value chains. Jos Bijman is project manager of the LIQUID research and capacity development project on quality improvement and inclusiveness in dairy value chains in Souteast Asia and East Africa. Jos Bijman isfirst editor of a 2016 book on cooperatives and producer organisations in developing and emerging countries: Cooperatives, Economic Democratization and Rural Development. Jos Bijman was project manager (together with Krijn Poppe) of the Support for Farmers' Cooperatives study, requested by the European Commission. This project investigated the development and current position of agricultural cooperatives in all EU Member States, as well as national and EU policies supporting cooperatives. This project resulted in 27 country reports, 8 sector reports, 6 special theme reports and 30 case studies.
