Biography
Dr Graeme Benny joined ESR as GM Health in August 2015. Working in executive roles in both the private and public sectors, Graeme brings strong management skills and a proven track record to the organisation. Before coming to ESR, Graeme was the Chief Executive of Health Workforce New Zealand. Prior to that, he held chief executive and other senior management roles in a number of organisations, including Careers New Zealand, the New Zealand Blood Service, the New Zealand Defence Force, Auckland District Health Board, and Metlifecare. He began his career as a Scientific Officer for the former Auckland Area Health Board. “My two passions are creating high-performing teams and health science so this role is a great opportunity to bring those two passions together and make a positive difference,†he says. With a team of over 70 scientists and technicians, Graeme says ESR’s health teams are well placed to build on previous successes. “We have some world-class scientists on our teams and offer the best microbiology services in New Zealand,†he says. “Through our science services, my aim is to ensure we continue to support New Zealand’s healthcare system and providers, while meeting the needs of our ultimate customers – New Zealanders.†Graeme says one way he plans to do this is by working to increase the number of medically qualified clinicians who work within ESR’s health teams. “Health science is the foundation of what we do and will remain our priority. At the same time, we need to better articulate the important and growing role we play within New Zealand’s healthcare system. We also need to continuously seek ways to meet the current and emerging needs of the sector.†Graeme earned his PhD in clinical biochemistry from the University of Auckland.
