Biography
Hugh has 35 years’ experience in natural resource management. He has previously served as chief executive of what is now Antarctica New Zealand responsible for running the New Zealand government Antarctic programme (4 years); he has been chief executive of the Department of Conservation responsible for New Zealand’s national parks, protected areas and protected species (9 years); and has been chief executive of the Ministry for the Environment responsible for New Zealand’s environmental policy and environmental regulatory regime (2 years). His roles have involved him also in a wide range of public sector management issues and conceptual challenges and organisational dynamics of running large public sector agencies. Hugh is currently a member of Environment Canterbury’s regional water management committee and chairs its Land Use and Water Quality sub-committee.

Protected area and species management, biosecurity, environmental management, public policy, environmental policy, Antarctic operations and history, outdoor recreation and mountaineering history.
