Biography
Mike’s main area of interest is exercise physiology and sport science. Mike teaches and researches into these broad areas and enjoys the ‘hands on’ approach required in these areas. Mike is active in many sports himself and also enjoys coaching a number of sports including rugby, basketball and softball. Mike is the academic co-ordinator of the Lincoln University Sports Scholarship Programme at the University. Research Interest
Mike has a broad area of research interest around the training and performance of athletes, including areas such as recovery strategies, new training techniques, altitude and hypoxic training, overtraining and physiological indicators of training stress. Mike has worked with organisations such as New Zealand Cycling, Triathlon New Zealand and the New Zealand Rugby Union as well as international teams such as the Netherlands Triathlon team, all with the purpose of improving performance. Mike also researches in the area of physical activity, fitness and health and has a particular interest in the physiological effects of physical activity and exercise on health. Mike has worked with national agencies such as the Ministry of Education and Sport New Zealand investigating physical activity in school children. More locally Mike has worked with Sport Canterbury and the Canterbury District Health Board on programmes trying to improve physical activity in numerous populations.
