Biography
Damian Carder is an experimental physicist in the Photonics team at Callaghan Innovation. His work is based around developing photonic materials and sensor systems in the infrared and terahertz region of the spectrum. In 2003 he was awarded a PhD in physics from the University of Sheffield, UK. His thesis studied semiconductor mid-infrared laser devices (Gallium-Arsenide-based quantum cascade lasers). From 2003 to 2005 he was a UK research associate at the multi-user free electron laser facility located in Nieuwegein in the Netherlands, studying dynamic processes in condensed matter. In May 2005 he started as a MacDiarmid Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Canterbury performing photoluminescence studies of Indium Nitride thin films. From July 2006 to December 2010 he then worked as a scientist in the ion beam technologies group at GNS Science, studying nanostructured and advanced materials. Since January 2011 he has been working at Callaghan Innovation (formerly Industrial Research Limited) and is presently a senior research scientist in the Photonics team.
