Biography
Mike Reid received a Ph.D. in Physics at University of Canterbury in 1981, with a thesis on applications of group theory to condensed-matter spectroscopy. From 1982 to 1985 he was a postdoc, and temporary faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Virgina. During that time his research became more firmly focused on the modelling of energy levels, and transition intensities of materials containing lanthanide (“rare earth”) and actinide ions. He held a faculty position at the University of Hong Kong from 1985 to 1993, when he returned to Canterbury.
Research Interest
Since 2000, Mike’s main focus has been on high-energy (UV and VUV) levels of lanthanide phosphor materials. Advances in synchrotron facilities has made possible detailed measurements and modelling of these states. Currently he leads a programme that uses two-colour (UV + IR) laser spectroscopy to probe the excited states in these materials. Currently Mike is developing new projects in applications of lanthanide nanoparticles in biomedical imaging and the understanding of electronic structure of quantum-information materials.
