Biography
Dr. Stanley Kopelow has been in practice for over thirty years, specializing in diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. He has had a special interest in diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Kopelow trained at the Jules Stein Eye Institute and was a member of the full time faculty from 1971 to 1977. He was involved in the training and teaching of residents and fellows in the diseases and surgery of the retina and vitreous. He left his position at the Jules Stein Eye Institute in 1977 to enter full-time private practice in the San Fernando Valley. He still maintains his affiliation with Jules Stein Institute as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology. Dr. Kopelow was the co-investigator of the National Collaborative Diabetic Retinopathy Study from 1971 to 1976 and the principle investigator for the Early Treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy study from 1979 to 1989. These studies established the current guidelines for laser treatment for diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Kopelow was named "Super Doctor" in 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 & 2015. Dr. Kopelow has authored over thirty-five scientific papers on diabetic eye disease and has given numerous lectures and presentations at scientific meetings. His current practice is limited to the diseases of the retina and vitreous. He still has a special interest in diabetic eye disease, as well as macular degeneration.
