Biography
Dr Haizal Hussaini is the Senior Lecturer in Department of Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences at University of Otago, New Zealand. His teaching includes: General Pathology, Oral Pathology in Clinical Practice module, Pathogenesis of Oral Diseases module, Human Disease module, Paper coordinator for 362; Postgraduate: Research Supervisor and Clinical Teaching for Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Oral Pathology. He is the author of large number of articles published in several reputed journals.
Research Interest
Dr Haizal Hussaini’s main core research interest is investigating immune responses in the tumour microenvironment, particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma. This research started in 2007 with subsequent completion of his PhD thesis in 2013. Three grants were obtained to fund this project with him as Principle Investigator one from Otago Medical Research Foundation (OMRF) and two from New Zealand Dental Association Research Foundation (NZDRF). This project is currently being expanded to include metastatic lymph node profiling as well as angiogenic role in oral squamous cell carcinoma metastatic spread. The current research will explore modulation of the immune system by cancer cells in the process of local invasion and lymph node metastasis and the role of angiogenesis in these processes.
