Biography
Jane studied Law and History (with Honours) at the University of Otago, graduating with prizes in History, including the Australia New Zealand Law & History Society Undergraduate Essay Prize. She practiced as a lawyer in both Dunedin and Melbourne, specialising in property law. During her years in Melbourne she was seconded to the Public Interest Law Clearing House (facilitating pro bono legal services) and acted as a Pro Bono Solicitor for the Mental Health Legal Centre. Returning to Dunedin in 2011, she undertook a PhD in History and Law, supported by the University of Otago Prestigious Doctoral Scholarship. Her thesis examined New Zealand’s medico-legal history of infertility and assisted reproductive technologies. Her PhD was awarded in May 2017.
Research Interest
Jane is a legal historian whose research focuses on law and society in its historical context. Her main field of research is in the intersection between medical law and social and gender history, with an additional interest in the history of access to justice and legal architecture.
