Biography
Ruth joined the University of Otago Faculty of Law in 2009 and specialises in family law research alongside Professor Mark Henaghan. She also supervises the Faculty of Law’s Research Assistants and Summer Scholars. She has a particular research interest in relocation cases, surrogacy, child poverty, children’s rights, domestic violence, intercountry adoption, and relationship property. She is the author of the Butterworths Student Companion: Family Law (2nd ed, 2014) and the co-author of Henaghan, Atkin, Caldwell, Clarkson, Swadling, and Ballantyne (eds) Family Law in New Zealand (17th edition, 2015). She has also co-authored several chapters on Family Law including: Eekelaar and George (eds) Routledge Handbook of Family Law and Policy (2014); and Atkin (eds) The International Survey of Family Law (2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016). Ruth has contributed to many other titles on family law including Henaghan and Atkin (eds) Family Law Policy in New Zealand (4th ed, 2013), Henaghan, Atkin, Caldwell, and Clarkson (eds) Family Law in New Zealand (16th edition, 2014), and the LexisNexis Family Law Service. Ruth is a member of the University of Otago Poverty Network and has served on the Otago Women Lawyers’ Society (OWLS) Committee since 2013.
Research Interest
Ruth's particular research interest lies in relocation cases, surrogacy, child poverty, children’s rights, domestic violence, intercountry adoption, and relationship property.
