Biography
Willem J.L. Coetzee, PhD., is a senior lecturer in the Department of Tourism. Overall, his research theme is within the nexus of tourism, with a focus on (i) protected areas, sustainability, small town tourism and World heritage sites and (ii) mega and hallmark events. In this context, he has explored specific issues among stakeholders in and around protected areas in Southern Africa and the impacts of nature based tourism on surrounding communities. His recent publications evolve around perceptions and consumer behaviours of attendees at sporting events (for example the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa) as well as music events, such as the Cape Town and Johannesburg Jazz Festivals. Willem has been involved in a range of tourism supply-and-demand projects in small towns and the formulation of tourism masterplans for such communities.
