Biography

Nneka Chiejina nee Okonkwo hails from Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. The first of seven surviving children of late Mr & Mrs J. N. Okonkwo. I went to the then prestigious girls’ secondary school by name ‘Archdeacon Crowther Memorial Girls’ Secondary School Elelenwa. I am a graduate of the University of Nigeria Nsukka from the Dept of Botany with 2nd class Hons Upper Division, the best graduating student in the Dept & Faculty(1972). I was therefore employed as a Junior Research Fellow. After a year I proceeded to Britain for my Master’s Degree in General Virology & Ph. D in Plant Virology sponsored by the University.I returned to the University after my studies and took up appointment as a Lecturer 11 staff and presently am an Associate Professor.

Research Interest

I am interested in research on the following; Aetiology of fungal rot diseases of fruits, vegetables, tubers and grains. Efficacy of plant extracts (botanicals) in the control of fungal pathogens. Phytochemical analyses of the plant extracts involved. Effective use of agricultural wastes in the cultivation of edible mushrooms. Yield, protein and proximate analyses of the mushrooms. The outcome of the above research interests is that I have published numerous peer reviewed papers in both national and international journals some with Impact Factor and some without.
